Backups, restore and versions
Taking and restoring backups, code versions (refs) and protecting your work.
- Can I name my backups?Yes. Send a name (up to 80 characters) when creating a backup, like "Before checkout rewrite". It appears in events.FAQ
- Can I restore a backup into a different bucket? No. A restore applies to the bucket the backup was taken from. To copy, download the files and upload them elsewhere.FAQ
- Do backups cost tokens or storage?Creating, restoring or deleting a backup is a normal API request: 1 token. Restoring is free and unlimited in count.FAQ
- Does Code Buckets keep versions of my files? There's no per-file versioning. Each code tree version has a ref you can read later, and backups let you restore a bucket.FAQ
- Does my one backup cover all my buckets? No. A backup captures one bucket. The limit of 1 is per account, so it can protect one bucket at a time.FAQ
- How do I back up a bucket with the API?POST /v1/buckets/{bucket_id}/backups with a name, or use the bucket's backups in the Console. The key needs backups:write.How-to
- How do I delete a backup?DELETE /v1/backups/{backup_id} removes the backup and frees your backup slot. The bucket itself isn't touched.How-to
- How do I make a bucket match a backup exactly?Restore with {"objects": "exact"} to also hide files added after the backup, so the stored files match the backup exactly.How-to
- How do I protect my code before letting a script or agent change it?Take a backup right before, give the tool a key without backups:write, and watch the events feed for what it did.How-to
- How do I restore a backup with the API?POST /v1/backups/{backup_id}/restore puts the backup's code back as a new version and brings back deleted files. Nothing is destroyed.How-to
- How do I see my backups?GET /v1/buckets/{bucket_id}/backups lists a bucket's backups and your plan's backup usage; GET /v1/backups/{id} returns one.How-to
- How many backups can I have?1 backup per account, across all buckets, on every plan. Restoring is free and unlimited. Contact us if you need more.FAQ
- I get 409 backup_limit when creating a backup. What now?You already have your 1 backup. Send "replace": true to replace it, or delete it first. error.existing_backup_id names it.Troubleshooting
- I only get one backup. Which bucket should I back up?Back up the bucket that would hurt most to lose, before risky changes, and keep your own downloads of other important buckets.How-to
- If I delete a file after a backup, is it really gone? Not while the backup exists. The backup keeps pointing at the stored data, and restoring brings the file back.FAQ
- We need more backups for our company. What are our options?Every plan includes 1 backup per account. Contact us for more, and meanwhile keep your own exports and refs.FAQ
- What does a backup capture?A backup captures a bucket's code tree (its ref) and the list of its stored zips and assets. Taking one is quick: nothing is copied.Explainer
- Will restoring a backup delete my current code? No. A restore adds the backup's tree as a new version; the current version stays reachable by its ref. Newer files are kept by default.FAQ
- Without a backup, can I still go back to older code?Yes, for reading: older code tree versions stay readable by ref. Re-upload that version's zip to make it current again.FAQ
