Which rate limit should I pick for an API key?
Every key has its own limit, chosen when you create it:
| Limit | Good for |
|---|---|
| 10 / min | Small scripts, tests, one-off tools |
| 30 / min (default) | Most apps and personal projects |
| 60 / min | Busier services |
| 120 / min | High-traffic backends |
Over the limit, requests answer 429 rate_limited with a Retry-After header (seconds to wait).
Things that don't use it up#
- An Agent API event stream counts once, when you open it, however long it stays open.
- Code Buckets chunk uploads and downloads don't count toward the per-minute limit.
Can I change it later?#
Not on an existing key. Create a new key with the limit you want, switch your app to it, then revoke the old one.
