What is an "effort" (or tier)?

ExplainerUpdated

An effort is how much work the model puts into each step: how long it thinks before acting, how carefully it plans and checks, and how many tokens that takes. Higher efforts reason longer and verify more, so they're slower and cost more per token.

  • Agent API calls them tiers (tier on a run).
  • Line CLI calls them efforts (/effort).
  • Model API: each effort is its own model id.

The prices and behaviour are the same whatever the name.

Good to know#

  • SuperCosmos reads text only; it doesn't take image input. What it can't do
  • Every tier shares the same 1M-token context window (1,048,576 tokens). Context window
  • A request whose prompt is over 262K tokens bills its whole input at 1.5×; output prices don't change. Long-context pricing
