What do the finish_reason values mean?
finish_reason | Meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
stop | The model finished, or a stop sequence was reached | Use the answer |
length | Output hit max_tokens or the model's cap | Raise max_tokens, ask for a shorter answer, or continue in a new turn |
tool_calls | The model wants you to run one or more tools | Run them and send tool messages back |
