Which message roles can I use?

system | Instructions for the whole conversation |
developer | Also accepted for instructions (the newer OpenAI name) |
user | What the person asks |
assistant | Earlier model replies; may include tool_calls |
tool | The result of a tool call; needs tool_call_id |
content is a string or an array of {"type": "text", "text": "..."} parts. Image or audio parts answer 400 unsupported_content.
