When do API keys expire?

FAQUpdated

When you create a key you pick Expires:

  • 30 days
  • 90 days (the default)
  • 1 year
  • Never — the key works until you revoke it.

The dialog shows the exact date ("on <date>"), and the keys list shows "until <date>" under an active key's status.

What happens at expiry#

The key's status changes to Expired and requests using it fail (on the Model API, with 401 expired_api_key). Nothing else on your account changes.

Which to choose#

Shorter is safer: if a key leaks without you noticing, it stops working on its own. For long-running servers, pick 1 year and set a reminder to rotate it before the date. Use Never only when you have another way to rotate keys regularly.
