Can I limit how long a run takes or how many steps it uses?

FAQUpdated

Runs have a built-in maximum of 150 steps, but there's no field on POST /v1/runs for a smaller step or time budget.

Ways to keep runs short#

  • Ask in the instructions: "Make at most one attempt at the fix, then report what you found."
  • Watch the stream: each step event carries an index. Your code can cancel the run when it passes a number you choose.
  • Cancel by time: start a timer in your code and call POST /v1/runs/{id}/cancel when it runs out.
  • Choose a lighter tier: Flash answers without extended thinking, so each step comes back quickly.
