What does empty_response mean?

TroubleshootingUpdated

The model returned nothing usable for this request. Retry it.

Code: empty_response · HTTP status: 502, 503 or 504

Instead of handing you an empty answer as if it were a success, the API reports it as an error so your code can retry.

Common causes#

  • a rare failed generation

How to fix it#

  1. Retry with backoff.
  2. If it repeats for the same prompt, simplify the prompt or try another effort, and send the X-Request-Id to support.

Should my code retry?#

Retryable.

The error body uses the OpenAI shape, so OpenAI SDKs raise it as an exception you can catch:

{"error": {"message": "...", "type": "...", "code": "empty_response", "param": null}}

Every response also carries an X-Request-Id. Keep it in your logs; it's the quickest way for support to find a request.

See the full list in the Model API reference.

Good to know#

  • If calls fail unexpectedly, check status.clatterlabs.com before debugging further.
  • Base URL: https://api.gateway.clatterlabs.xyz/v1, with Authorization: Bearer clsk_... and X-Clatter-Account: CL-... on every call. Quick reference
  • Each key has its own limit: 10, 30 (default), 60 or 120 requests per minute. Rate limits
