What does 400 invalid_effort mean?

TroubleshootingUpdated

The effort (or reasoning_effort) value isn't one the API knows.

Code: invalid_effort · HTTP status: 400

effort accepts flash, max or heavy. reasoning_effort accepts low, medium or high, which map to Flash, Max and Heavy.

Common causes#

  • a typo such as "effort": "fast" or "heavvy"
  • an old Line Code effort name (fast, ultra, ultra-fast)
  • reasoning_effort set to a value other than low, medium or high

How to fix it#

  1. Use flash, max or heavy.
  2. Or drop effort and call a specific id like supercosmos-max.
  3. Leaving the effort out with the family id supercosmos runs Flash.

Should my code retry?#

Not retryable until the value is fixed.

The error body uses the OpenAI shape, so OpenAI SDKs raise it as an exception you can catch:

{"error": {"message": "...", "type": "...", "code": "invalid_effort", "param": null}}

Every response also carries an X-Request-Id. Keep it in your logs; it's the quickest way for support to find a request.

See the full list in the Model API reference.
