Do API keys expire on their own?
You choose when you create a key, in the Expires field:
| Option | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 30 days | Stops working after 30 days |
| 90 days | The default |
| 1 year | Stops working after a year |
| Never | Works until you revoke it |
The keys list in Console › API keys shows "until <date>" for expiring keys. After expiry, Model API calls with the key answer 401 expired_api_key; nothing else on your account changes.
Which to choose: shorter is safer, because a leaked key stops working on its own. For long-running servers, pick 1 year and plan a rotation before the date (rotate without downtime). Use Never only if you rotate keys another way.
Good to know#
- Your key's account is responsible for your end users' text under the Abuse policy. What it means for apps
- Each key has its own limit: 10, 30 (default), 60 or 120 requests per minute. Rate limits
- New accounts get $5 of free credit; top up from $1 to $800 per purchase in Console › Billing › Credits. Billing
