What is a run?

ExplainerUpdated

A run is one job for Cosmos. You start it with your instructions, Cosmos works on it step by step, and it ends with a result.

What a run contains#

  • input: your instructions, up to 20,000 characters.
  • status: queued, running, completed, failed or cancelled.
  • steps: how many steps Cosmos took. Each step is a message or a tool call, such as running a command.
  • output: Cosmos's final answer once the run is completed.
  • files: files Cosmos saved as outputs.
  • usage: the tokens the run used.
  • tier: the tier you asked for (auto, flash, max or heavy).

How long can a run be?#

A run can take up to 150 steps. Long tasks continue in segments past any single request's time limit, and runs keep going even if you disconnect.

How many at once?#

An account can have 5 runs queued or running at the same time. A sixth answers 429 too_many_runs.
