What does 402 out_of_credits mean?

Your credit balance (and any trial credit left) is used up. Model API calls are paid only from credits.

Code: out_of_credits · HTTP status: 402

Plans, including paid ones, don't cover Model API calls, so a paid plan doesn't prevent this error.

Common causes#

• the $5 free credit is spent
• a busy integration used more than expected
• you're on a team and the owner's credits ran out

How to fix it#

1. Top up in Console › Billing › Credits: any amount from $1 to $800 per purchase.
2. Credits land within seconds; then send the request again.
3. Check Console › Usage and Logs to see what spent the balance.

Should my code retry?#

Retrying without adding credits fails the same way, so stop and alert someone instead of looping.

The error body uses the OpenAI shape, so OpenAI SDKs raise it as an exception you can catch:

Every response also carries an X-Request-Id. Keep it in your logs; it's the quickest way for support to find a request.
