What does model_timeout mean?

TroubleshootingUpdated

The model took too long to answer this request, so it was stopped.

Code: model_timeout · HTTP status: 502, 503 or 504

Long reasoning on Heavy or very long outputs make timeouts more likely.

Common causes#

  • a very long prompt and a large max_tokens on Heavy
  • a busy moment on the service

How to fix it#

  1. Retry with backoff.
  2. Use stream: true so tokens arrive as they're produced.
  3. Lower max_tokens or split the task into smaller steps.
  4. Try Max or Flash if Heavy's depth isn't needed.

Should my code retry?#

Retryable with backoff.

The error body uses the OpenAI shape, so OpenAI SDKs raise it as an exception you can catch:

{"error": {"message": "...", "type": "...", "code": "model_timeout", "param": null}}

Every response also carries an X-Request-Id. Keep it in your logs; it's the quickest way for support to find a request.

See the full list in the Model API reference.
