What does 404 model_not_found mean?

TroubleshootingUpdated

The model id you sent doesn't exist. The live message reads: The model "…" does not exist. See GET /v1/models.

Code: model_not_found · HTTP status: 404

Valid ids are supercosmos-flash, supercosmos-max, supercosmos-heavy, or the family id supercosmos with an effort.

Common causes#

  • an OpenAI model name left in your code (for example a default from a library)
  • a typo or wrong capitalisation
  • a made-up id such as supercosmos-1.1

How to fix it#

  1. Call GET /v1/models (no key needed) and copy an id from it.
  2. Search your code and config for the old model name.

Should my code retry?#

Not retryable with the same id.

The error body uses the OpenAI shape, so OpenAI SDKs raise it as an exception you can catch:

{"error": {"message": "...", "type": "...", "code": "model_not_found", "param": null}}

Every response also carries an X-Request-Id. Keep it in your logs; it's the quickest way for support to find a request.

See the full list in the Model API reference.
