What does 403 account_suspended mean?

TroubleshootingUpdated

Your account is paused for 24 hours under the Abuse policy, after a second strike within 30 days. Every call fails until the time in resets_at.

Code: account_suspended · HTTP status: 403

On the Model API the key owner's account is responsible for all text sent with its keys, including your end users' text.

Common causes#

  • insulting or cursing at the assistant a second time within 30 days, by you or by an end user of your app

How to fix it#

  1. Read resets_at in the body and the Retry-After header (seconds).
  2. Wait: the account works again on its own when the 24 hours end. Credits, plan, keys and data are not touched.
  3. If you think it's a mistake, appeal through the Support Center with your Account ID and the time of the request.
  4. Before resuming, add filtering for end-user input and act on the x-clatter-notice warning header.

Should my code retry?#

Don't retry before resets_at: retries fail the same way.

The error body uses the OpenAI shape, so OpenAI SDKs raise it as an exception you can catch:

{"error": {"message": "...", "type": "...", "code": "account_suspended", "param": null}}

Every response also carries an X-Request-Id. Keep it in your logs; it's the quickest way for support to find a request.

See the full list in the Model API reference.
