What is tool calling?

ExplainerUpdated

Tool calling lets the model ask your code to do something it can't do alone: look up an order, check the weather, query a database, send an email.

  1. You describe tools (name, description, JSON schema for arguments) in tools.
  2. The model replies with tool_calls and finish_reason: "tool_calls" when it wants one.
  3. Your code runs the function and sends the result back as a tool message.
  4. The model uses the result to answer, or calls another tool.

The model never runs anything itself. Your code decides what actually happens, so you stay in control. Up to 64 tools per request; all three SuperCosmos efforts support tools.

Good to know#

  • Each key has its own limit: 10, 30 (default), 60 or 120 requests per minute. Rate limits
  • Every call shows in Console › Logs and Usage as Model API, with its price. See what you spent
  • Every response has an X-Request-Id; log it so a request can be found later. Why log it
