What's the difference between hooks, plugins, skills and MCP in Line CLI?
| What it is | Example | |
|---|---|---|
| Hook | A script run at an event (before/after a tool, on prompt, on stop, at session start) | Run a formatter after every edit |
| Plugin | A plugin.json bundle of tools, slash commands, hooks and skills | A "guard" plugin with a deps tool and /guard:audit |
| Skill | A SKILL.md folder of instructions (and optional scripts) the agent loads when a task fits | A release checklist |
| MCP server | An external program or URL that provides tools over MCP | A GitHub or docs server |
| Custom sub-agent | A .line/agents/*.md agent with its own instructions and tools | A test-writer agent |
All are off or ask for trust until you approve them, except your own hooks and skills.
