What does it mean that Max and Heavy "think" or "reason"?

Max and Heavy have extended thinking: before the final answer, they work through the problem step by step, like doing scratch work on paper. That reasoning:

• makes them better at planning, debugging and hard problems,
• takes extra time (Max and Heavy took about 7 to 9 seconds per benchmark task versus 3.5 for Flash),
• costs output tokens,
• can be shown to you (on the Model API as reasoning_content).

Flash skips this step and answers straight away.
