What does the "auto" model setting do in Line CLI?

ExplainerUpdated

Auto is Line's default. Instead of one fixed effort, Line chooses the SuperCosmos effort for each step:

  • Max for the first step of a turn (planning) and after failures (debugging).
  • Flash for routine steps such as reading files and simple edits.

Billing#

Each call is billed at the effort it actually ran on, so routine steps cost Flash rates.

When to pick a fixed effort#

  • Very hard bugs: /effort heavy.
  • Fast, simple work: /effort flash.

Switch back with /model → Auto.

Auto as an effort#

Since 0.8.0-beta, SuperCosmos also has an auto effort (/effort auto or -e auto) that routes per step the same way while the model stays set to SuperCosmos.
