How do I write a good system prompt in the Playground?

How-toUpdated

A system prompt sets the rules for the whole chat. A good one:

  1. Role — "You are a careful code reviewer."
  2. Task — "Point out bugs and suggest a fixed version."
  3. Format — "Use short bullet points grouped under New, Improved and Fixed."
  4. Limits — "If you're not sure, say so."

The Playground's examples, like Draft release notes, show complete system prompts. The system prompt counts as input tokens on every message, so keep it tight.

Good to know#

  • Playground use is billed from your API credits, like the Model API and Agent API.
  • View code turns what you tried into Python, JavaScript or cURL.
  • SuperCosmos reads text only; image input isn't supported.
