I get 409 not_ready when downloading or reading an object. Why?

409 not_ready means the object's upload isn't complete yet.

If you're the uploader: send any missing chunks and call POST /v1/uploads/{upload_id}/complete.
If another process is uploading: wait for the upload.completed event, or poll GET /v1/uploads/{upload_id} until it isn't uploading.
